Turkish television drama has developed dramatically over the last 2020 years. As one of the member states of the Commonwealth of Nations, Turkey has long been a popular choice for global television viewers looking for something a little different than what they are used to. Many Turkish shows have been made for an American audience, but many also have been successful for being shown in other countries. Many dramas are the most popular local cultural and economic exports of Turkey and have been enjoyed by viewers in both the United States and Europe for decades. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular Turkish series currently available on TV today!
The first Turkish series that we will examine is “Ayan H reinvest”. This show stars Ayan Al-Juraki as a businessman who travels back in time to retrieve items from the ancient ruins of Hristos, located in the northeast area of Turkey. In the present day, the town is an important seaport for shipping cars and trucks across Europe and the Middle East, so this treasure hunt presents a unique opportunity for the main character, Ayan. Based on the book by Peter V. Brettler, “Ayan H reinvests” follows the original story almost word for word, but with a modern version of twists and turns that make it all the more interesting to fans of Turkish dramas.
Another popular Turkish series that is currently enjoying popularity among Turkish viewers is the soap opera “Kairat”. This drama, which originally ran on TV in Turkey, has been running in various countries across the globe since its inception in the 1960s. It is primarily centered on a love story between a male protagonist, Murat, and his female partner, Emine. The romantic element of the plot draws viewers in quickly, and the suspense that surrounds the couple’s relationship is enough to keep Turkish viewers glued to their televisions. Like “Ayan H reinvest”, “Kairat” is another example of a Turkish drama being shown to an international audience.
If these two soap operas are anything to go by, then American viewers can rest assured that they will not be disappointed when watching “Ayan H reinvests”. However, the success of these two dramas has also prompted producers in Turkey to produce similar romantic stories, as the demand for Turkish programming increases. There are already a number of Turkish drama series regulars in American television and more will follow in the future. In addition to “Ayan H reinvest”, viewers who want to see the English version of this soap opera should look no further than “Hakanlar”, which is yet another example of a Turkish drama being shown to an international audience.
The other two most popular Turkish dramas in the United States are “Tursunettin”, which is based on the life of a young woman who moves to California, and “Bayen”, which follows the travels of a young woman from Istanbul, California to Istanbul. Both of these soap operas have gained a great deal of popularity in their home country, but they have also gained more fans abroad, in countries like America and Canada. One of the most interesting elements of “Tursunettin” and “Bayen” is that they tell the story across several seasons, which makes watching an entire season a must-watch. Each season revolves around a different main character, which makes the show’s theme song a fitting centerpiece for each time the series is aired. This unique feature makes “Bayen” and “Tursunettin” a hit in their own rights, but the unique Turkish drama format allows them to appeal to an international audience as well.
Another popular Turkish series is “Osman Hur”, which stars Can Countenance as its protagonist, a young woman from Oklahoma who moves to join her uncle in Istanbul. She soon gets herself caught up in the life of an organized crime family. “Osman Hur” follows the lives of five main characters: Ahmed, a petty thief; Meryem, a promiscuous girl who falls for a man; Mustafa, a corrupt police officer; Korkut, a hoodlum; and Ozcan, a Turkish detective. The show’s dynamic trio of interesting characters keeps Turkish drama coming alive on screen. It’s a thrill to watch Mustafa, Korkut, and Ozcan, especially after seeing their earlier work.
The final Turkish series worth mentioning is the long-running “icably.” This popular Turkish soap opera has been running for fifteen seasons and is still one of the best-written Turkish dramas I’ve seen. Iman carries the lead role, playing a socially-awakening Istanbul bride whose conservative mother wants her to wed a boy from a lower-class family. But Iman also plays a lesbian lover, who gets married to a wealthy man in order to raise her son. This show has everything you can expect from a Turkish soap opera, and while it may not be a mainstream hit like “The Mentalist,” it is still a funny, charming, and heartfelt show that will stay on your mind long after the end of the current season.
As you can see, there are many more excellent Turkish dramas out there. If you’re looking for something a little bit different to watch, these five Turkish series will give you what you need. Top turkey is a great genre to explore, and it would love to see more of these shows. So the next time you find yourself watching Turkish television, make sure you include at least one of these five fantastic serials!
